“I recently learned that there are newly constructed apartment buildings within our county currently “jam packed with migrants…and more out behind the buildings living in tents”. This came as a shock to our real estate lady (turned friend) as I learned while on the telephone the other day. Since then I have had my brother and as of today one other very active county resident promise to look for more places like this then let me know what they find. I started searching what I could find online and discovered some interesting facts.
Fact 1…President Trump while still in office signed an executive order shifting the decision to welcome or turn away refugees onto the shoulders of local government officials. I want to find out if these arrangements were just for documented immigrants or if this was devised for housing illegals…
Fact 2…While this order has since been tabled, it has sparked a debate over who gets to make the final decision on where asylum seekers wind up.
Fact 3…Sylvia Acevedo from the Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services has been quoted as saying that there has been no settlement over the debate but her organization is still placing refugees.
I am gathering what information I can find and reading up on who decides right now…also learning about DeSantis’ new Anti-Illegal Immigration Legislation – supposedly the strongest in the country.
I would like to get up to speed…mainly this whole thing has been kept so quiet it just seems sneaky…so I want to learn as much as I can and then make an appointment with our sheriff…Constitutional sheriff…up for re-election very soon…after touring these migrant neighborhoods and getting a feel for how the actual residents feel about it all and how they are getting along. And taking lots of photos.
Another interesting twist…an organization called Welcome Corps is now “a refugee sponsorship initiative under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP).” It sounds like they are some sort of middle man between volunteer “sponsors” and newly arriving refugees. Sounds ok except for all the odd facts about this same name unearthed awhile back by The Amazing Polly… I printed out what I can find on the new Welcome Corps. I just can’t shake the curiosity about the name and similarity of what they both do…Wish me luck!”
